Our Reader

3-ACT Cinema Magazine’s ambition is to build a profound collection of words and images to celebrate cinema as art, knowledge ,inspiration and enjoyment. It is to develop a cinema magazine devoid of common tabloids on films in Myanmar. Rather, it is to offer curated articles which have an in-depth focus on local cinema and which address film as art that provokes to rethink cinema’s current standing in Myanmar.

We publish 3-ACT Cinema Magazine for filmmakers, cinephile, artists and activists. There are three acts in our magazine,

(ACT-1) Local Cinema Landscape,

(ACT-2) Moving an Image,

(ACT-3) Cinematic Language.

Each and every issue of 3-ACT is constructed with a specific theme as a special feature.

It is brought to life by the collaboration of our group of contributing editors and guest-writers.

As an independent, non-commerical-driven publication, 3-ACT Cinema Magazine solely relies on the support of its readers and sponsors.

Since its inception, it has collaborated with Pyinsarasa, MEMORY! International Heritage Film Festival and Cahiers Du Cinema Magazine .

ISSUE 1

The special feature of Issue 1 ACT-1 falls under the theme “Cinema Is Not Dead But Not Alive” which is a thought-provoking view on the current situation of Myanmar Cinema. The articles look into forms that are shaping Cinema to its new direction and whether current state of Burmese Film Industry has given birth to Burmese New Wave or has it not yet. It includes a research article on the developing Myanmar Cinema, a photography series that reflects the title and a report on film festivals in Myanmar. Apart from the special issue, ACT-1 is also presented with the never-read-before analysis of the renowned Director Maung Wunna films focusing on “Tender Are The Feet”.

Apart from these special articles, under ACT-2, we approached the forms of filmmaking from different realms such as documentary, storyboarding and production design. Under ACT-3, we wrote about the directorial trait of Japanese Director Yazujiro Ozu, 3-ACT Structure in Scriptwriting, French New Wave, the Birth of Cinema and many more that reflects insight on cinema academia..

Issue 2

The special feature of Issue 2 ACT-1 falls under the theme “Through Her Lens” which is an emphasis on femininity. It includes a reported article on the visions of Myanmar Women Filmmakers and a research article on the representation of the roles of female characters through different periods of films in Myanmar. Through these, we aim to share the necessity of the growth of women characters that showcase their depth and intelligence rather than a stereotypical social role of womanhood in Myanmar Films.

Apart from these special articles, under ACT-2, we approached Dir Htoo Paing Zaw Oo on the art of directing and auditioning his casts, conducted a multilayered outtake on 8th Wathann Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival and many more. Under ACT-3, we wrote about the directorial trait of French New Wave Godmother Agnes Varda followed by an interview with her and 3-ACT on her art, continued to include the second part of film history, explored Japanese New Wave and so on.
